Other Possible Costs
Academic Course Charges
During the initial months of your child’s stay at Heartlight, they will either be at the Boy’s Heartlight East House, or the Girl’s Heartlight South House. Their schooling on-property utilizes the Texas Tech curriculum with supervision and teaching from our teaching staff. There is a charge of $110 for each course in which your child is enrolled. The average student may take 2-4 courses per semester. Heartlight provides the on-site teachers, tutors (as needed) and textbooks; we ask the parents to cover the Texas Tech tuition and a periodic testing fee (usually $30).
Most often when your child moves up in Levels and switches to the Main Campus (usually within 3-4 months), they or you may choose to transition to the local public school with no need to order further Texas Tech curriculum and no further course cost. Some students, however, choose to stay on campus and continue the self-paced Texas Tech program.
Travel
Cost of travel for you and your child to and from Heartlight would be determined by the distance Heartlight is from your home, as well as how you decide to travel. Heartlight encourages residents to travel home when appropriate and requires parents to attend a series of three Parent Retreats and encourages participation in the three annual Family Retreats. Parents are responsible for their own lodging when visiting Longview, Texas.
Personal Expenses Account -- How we Cover Your Child's Extra Expenses
Monthly personal expenses for each child vary based on clothing needs, medical and dental expenses, need for toiletries or school supplies, special tutoring, Texas Tech courses at Heartlight East or Heartlight South, and special extra curricular school activities. We ask that this personal expense account be maintained at $400 and whatever is spent from that be reimbursed monthly. The parent must approve all expenses as they occur.
